I spent two days trying to understand a fly.
It kept landing on my head, my shoulder, the bridge of my nose.
Every time I tried to swat it...
I hit only myself.
…….
So eventually, I stopped trying.
Instead...
I started paying attention.
Maybe it was just a fly.
Or maybe...
it was simply refusing to let me ignore it.
……..
That led to another question.
How does something so small get the attention of something so large?
A fly.
A human.
A whale.
A mountain.
Maybe...
persistence is enough.
Then the question changed.
Not...
"What is the fly trying to tell me?"
But...
"If I could tell the fly one thing...
what would it be?"
I imagined it only had days to live.
Maybe less.
What could I possibly say to a creature whose entire lifetime might fit inside a single week?
…..
Not...
"Watch out for spiders."
Not...
"Avoid the swatter."
Just this.
You are safe here.
Stay as long as you need.
Then...
carry on.
……
And that's when I realized...
I wasn't talking to the fly anymore.
I was describing the world I've been trying to build.
For rabbits.
Dragonflies.
Birds.
Foxes passing through.
Deer resting in the grass.
Lightning bugs looking for one another before the night grows old.
Maybe...
people, too.
……..
My art doesn't arrive as art.
It arrives as life.
The art...
is what follows.
An ordinary encounter.
A little attention.
And something that didn't exist before.
